ABOUT THE ARTIST

Corey Godfrey, Fiber Artist

Corey Godfrey is a German-born fiber artist who resides in Dallas, Texas. She graduated with a BFA in Drawing and Painting from the University of North Texas in 2008. While studying, she began experimenting with various craft mediums until she discovered her true love: yarn, a material generally associated with “women’s work.” Her 2D and 3D works and installations explore themes of memory, female sexuality, nature, and introspection. Corey has exhibited her work regionally and nationally. She is also the Production and Administrative Manager at the arts non-profit AURORA, an organization that focuses on art, technology, and community.

Artist Statement

Corey Godfrey’s work is rooted in a fascination with “craft” materials, inspired by the playful creativity of her 1980s childhood. Her discovery of yarn ignited a passion for its sensual process and historical ties to women’s strength. Guided by dream imagery, her works act as visual storyboards, capturing memories that evolve as time softens their clarity. Using yarn as a tactile and symbolic medium, each piece depicts women transforming into elements of nature, symbolizing interconnectedness and strength while confronting the pressures of a male-dominated world. This series unravels the complexities of the female experience, exploring themes of vulnerability, resilience, and beauty. Vibrant yarn layers symbolize the passage of time, with each thread reflecting aging and mental health challenges, while patterns reveal tension and harmony. These transformations invite viewers to uncover what lies beneath the surface as both intimate and expansive—offering moments of connection, reflection, and discovery.
